Even brilliant students sometimes lose marks due to easily avoidable mistakes. Here are the top five errors you must watch out for:
1. Answering the Wrong Question
Always dissect the essay prompt. Underline the key directives (e.g., "compare," "analyze," "evaluate") and ensure every paragraph loops back to the central question.
2. Poor Paragraph Structure
Use the PEEL method: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. A paragraph without evidence is just an unsupported opinion.
3. Weak Introductions and Conclusions
Your introduction should hook the reader and present a clear thesis statement. Your conclusion should summarize your argument without introducing entirely new concepts.
4. Plagiarism
Always cite your sources properly using the required format (APA, Harvard, MLA). Accidental plagiarism is still plagiarism!
5. Skipping the Proofreading Phase
Never submit your first draft. Read your essay out loud to catch awkward phrasing, and run it through a spelling and grammar checker.
